    General Election 2010 / 2011

Will update the title when we have a definite date but looks increasingly likely as the day goes on that any election will be this side of Christmas.

The most recent poll (SBP Red C - 21/11/10) has the parties as follows:

    FG - 33%
    Lab - 27%
    FF - 17%
    SF - 11%
    Greens - 3%

Obviously that doesn't necessarily transfer into seats but it's incredible to think that the shinners are only 6% behind FF in the poll.

The obvious coalition is FG/Lab but it will be interesting the see if there is a flood of support toward one or the other. If there is then that will decide who leads the next government - personally I'd much rather Gilmore than Kenny.

I'll try to keep this thread updated with the candidates for each constituency etc. in this first post.

Try keep the debate reasonable without resorting to long rants but lively debate is encouraged.

May pack the bag now if Gilmore gets the big job. Or if Varadkar gets any ministry of any kind.
I dont want FF in power, and I dont prefer any of the opposition, so there is no good outcome for me here.

So vote for the Stickies or the PbP people.

At this stage, anyone who votes for FF on the basis that they don't trust anyone else is basically admitting they can't understand how much of a balls FF have made.

Will be interesting to see if the DOnegal by-election happens now

I'm told it will - the people on the islands have voted already today so the election has in fact started.

Could be the shortest sitting TD in history.

    traditionally voted FF-

Couldnt possibly vote Labour, Sinners etc.

Greens have proven themselves to be what they are

    FF are practically unvotable currently

FG are run by someone whom I believe would do a worse job than Larry Murphy as a contestant on "Dating in the Dark"

Thoroughly deplorable set of options currently- I follow politics and would be familiar with alot fo the candidates - and sweet suffering jesus the current options are deplorable.

I think the IMF should run a candidate or two!

Is that really important though? I wouldn't vote FG as I'd be opposed to their ideologies but I think the importance of a leader having charisma etc is totally overblown by the media. If he can delegate and get good people around him what does it matter how any party leader comes across in interviews? Surely substance matters more than soundbites?

I hear the decision at the moment is either:

1 - Cowen will announce his resignation tonight and FF to seek to agree budget with other parties
2 - Cowen will go to the Park and ask Holy Mary to dissolve the Dáil at which point we have an election within 3 weeks

Fwiw, I will be giving my first choice to trev sergeant. Not because I am a tree hugger, or even a particular greens fan. But he does fantastic work in the area all year round. Not like that mongo James Reilly who will be making his traditional pre-election handshake fest. Only time he is seen around here.

This country really needs a stand out leader and can't really see it.

Am hoping we see smaller political groups rise because I'm sick to death of these groups.

Can you imagine Joan Burton representing Ireland.

Only way I would even look at Labour if they shift her.

Voting Green just to annoy Red 125.

    Up the pixies!

Expect a small turnout at any election. There is simply no viable alternative for most people. Enda kenny? Jaysus!
Labour are afraid to have a policy on anything in case they alienate potential voters one way or another. Lord we could have the likes of Jack O Connor dictating policy on the public sector!

i personally think a general election wont do us any good.look at the 1980s,the country was in a hole and it was only made worse by changing governments every 5 minutes.
and if we do vote FF out,who else is there.Enda Kenny?? Eamonn Gilmore?? in that case whoever is last out the door has to switch the lights off

Now they'll be dictating Government policy on it. Fucking gangsters every one of them.

David Begg will be rolled out soon after going to ground for months because he STILL sits on the board of Aer Lingus after they tried to sack all the cabin crew and take them back on reduced terms.

Anyone who stands behind these guys on marches deserves exactly what they get. Sheep the lot of them.

Fully agree. We had a very charismatic leader who jumped ship and left us the legacy we now have. Bruton is delusional if he thinks he is the Mr. Personality of F.G. and Veradker tells us all what he thinks we want to hear, no substance.

Are you refering to Bertie? A crook of the highest order. His and Cowen's incompetence are why were in the shit we're in at the moment.

    Who would you vote for?

Who would you vote for in an Election?

Maybe one of the Mods can merge this with the General Election 2010/11 thread (someone on the thread asked could someone do a poll on this subject, just helping out)

So far after a massive 5 votes we have a FG/Lab/SF rainbow coalition. Now there's a sentence I thought I'd never say!!!!

anyway- notthe thread for our bi-annual social welfare/trade union/public service arguments- so let's agree to park it there.

Yeah Gaz- I know what your saying- but

    A) I'd be embarassed watching kenny represent us abroad
    b) despite FF troubles FG has not capitalised and public opinion is very much against EK
    c) cannot even inspire his own party- never mind the rest of us.

3 years ago FG criticised the budget for not giving enough
2 years ago labours proposals to buy votes were to increase peoples statutory holidays

now they are spouting to us that this mess was all FF doing- as if gilmore and kenny would have done things different.

Gilmore still hasn't come out of the grass and told the people what he will actually do if he gets power-

With Sinn Féin being another Republican Party, why as a matter of interest would you not vote for them if you usually vote Fianna Fáil, the other 'Republican Party'? Just wondering.

I'm also like Gaz, wouldn't vote Fine Gael in convulsions.
