    The Film Thread

Don't think we have one of these so it'll be handy to have. If you watch a decent film throw it in here

Just watched Kill List. Absolutely fucked up but really enjoyed it. Had the most hard to watch scene of violence i have ever scene. Would defo recommend.

They are fairly old at this stage but Blood Diamond and ThelastkingofScotland are cracking movies.

Went the cinema the other day for the first time in 6/7 months. Watched 21 Jump Street. Cracking comedy. Far exceeded (admittedly low) expectations

Kill List is a weird one. Still not sure if I like it or not. Its a complete destruction of society though, or one mans journey through it. Savage violence alright.
Anyone who hasnt seen it yet should check out Snowtown, a depiction of the Aussie Snowtown murders, Ive never seen a film keep such a high level of tenson from the very start to the very end. Its exhausting watching it.

I agree with the 21 Jump street reviews. Very enjoyable in a take-the-piss-out-of-itself kinda way.

Contraband is nothing new, but an Ok way to send 100 minutes.

Mission Impossibler is a must see. The best one yet.

Been a bit slow with movies yet as its examtime. Have a huge amount there to get through.
Dont forget to be careful posting film details folks. Not everyone will have seen it yet.

Have only seen the Swedish version of 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' and pretty much refuse to go see/rent/watch remakes on general principle (the principle being not rewarding lazy bastards who have the talent to write their own stuff but take the easy option). The Swedish one is excellent though parts 2 and 3 of the the trilogy are nowhere near as good.

Of those in saintly's list, I've seen:

127 Hours - pretty good. Initially I thought I'd have no sympathy for the twat but I did fairly soon.
The Artist - Not sure it deserved all those Oscars but it's different and enjoyable.
The Skin I Live In* - Some reviews (in Spain especially) were very dismissive so maybe that lowered my expectations but I liked this a lot. It's weird though and if you don't like Almodovar's more accessible stuff like Volver, chances are you'll hate this. If you do like it, then make sure you check out 'Broken Embraces' from 2009 which is a slow burner but very good (enjoyed it a lot more the second time).
True Grit - Broke my general rule here because I never really liked the original that much and wanted to see what the Coen's might do with this. It's pretty good if a bit drawn out.
The Guard - You've all seen it.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - Saw this only the weekend before last. It's very good though it isn't a film to watch when just vegging out as the plot will lose you.

One from recent years I would recommend is an Argentinian film called 'El Secreto De Sus Ojos' (The Secret In Their Eyes)*. It's a little in the vein of 'The Lives Of Others' in that it's essentially a love story but isn't gooey and has a very dark undercurrent. Set in Argentina in the years leading up to and during The Dirty War. It's fairly slow paced but loses nothing for that in my view.

    * Warning - has subtitles and doesn't contain any car chases.

I remember going to see Goodbye Lenin! in Liffey Valley. "Two tickets for Screen 4, please." "Are you sure?" "Eh, yeah." "Do you know it has subtitles?"

Saw Ides of March and The Descendants last week. Don't know if they're out yet in Ireland. Both very watchable if nothing more, although Clooney seems to have a bit of a Marmite effect on people.

Everyone must see The Raid: Redemption

Quite possibly the most awesome movie ever. Plot is coppers enter a building must get to the top and kill someone possibly a bad guy. The next 100 minutes is constant mentalness.

Each to their own I suppose. That description just earned it a place on my "don't waste two hours of your life watching this cliched shit" list.

Some Asian action movies can be absolutely top-drawer. "The Departed" (with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonard Di Caprio) was basically a remake of one called "Infernal Affairs." Korea is starting to put out brilliant war movies right up there with the likes of "Letters from Iwo Jima". I'm looking forward to this one.

Haven't but it's on my 'to watch' list. 'Welcome To Dongmakgol' is good if you don't let the occasional bit of Korean weirdness faze you.

I have no interest in basketball but watched this the other weekend and it was a fantastic sports doc (I know I'm a few years behind!)

If you liked Hoop Dreams you'll love it

I'd endorse that matz. Hoops dreams is the best sports documentary every (best documentary ever IMO)

If you're into sports docs, you should try and catch the ESPN 30 for 30 series. of course they're US-centric but mostly all brilliant.

On a point vaguely related to ESPN, sports docs and films, I only realised very recently that Dodgeball actually is a sport, always thought it was just made up for the film.

Yeah, I think so. Bought two talented high school basketball prospects as they seek to get a scholarship. Heartbreaking at times
