Good to see them win, they'll certainly go through, hopefully they'll be shattered and drop a few points in the league
And Brian Kerr is in tears.

I think Rovers and ourselves to a lesser extent are a good example that going a few rounds in Europe makes little difference.
It still has to be seen if the Pikey's are running their business properly (whatever that is in LOI world). Anyway I suspect that anything they make from 3 rounds is already spent and as much I dislike Dundalk we need a few teams in the league

If the rumours are true that they are paying Towell €1000 a week for 52 weeks then they're not running their business properly

That just means they're getting €52k a year less off Fyffes, they're not giving them sponsorship plus Towells wages

From what I seen Sligo had a lot of the ball but never looked like creating an opening. Banga came into it strong in the last 10-15 and should have scored. Sligo should go through but they've an awful european record so who knows.

Three matches in, looking like two wins and a draw for Irish sides. Two wins more than last season already

Feck the begrudgers. Five wins and a draw from six EL ties is great. The higher Ireland goes up the rankings, the better for all clubs. From a high of 29th to 43rd this year is a big drop. Another two or three leg wins should see us back in the 30s. Derry stand a chance against the Belarussians and Dundalk just might turn over Hadjuk tho I can't see Sligo taking down Rosenborg.

Is the results for Irish teams so far likely to make any real difference to the association ranking?

I fancy Derry to go through in the next round but I haven't got much hope for the other 2.

We kinda need to be ranked in the mid 30s to mid 40s

Any higher and our cup winners enter at 2nd round and have less chance of doing well

In 2012 Sligo entered at 3rd round. They had no chance. Would have been better for them if they entered in 1st

Very true. But the flip side of that is that if our clubs enter at later stages and get a bit of luck in the draw and pull off the win, the group stages aren't far off (e.g. Scum with Partizan).
I'd still like to see us as far up the rankings as possible.

You'd need them to create two huge shocks to qualify for the group stages. We played Hannover (for example) at the 3rd round. Even if we had won that we'd have had to face another side of equal or better quality after it.

Rovers created one shock (and I'm not knocking them) but if they had had to win against 2 sides of that quality (or more likely above), they wouldn't have done so.

I'm not saying Irish teams shouldn't do their best but a higher ranking can bring its own problems.
