    World Cup betting thread

Think this might deserve it's own thread!

Brazil winner and messi top scorer is 33/1 which I think is decent value

Dzeko has been backed into 50s from 80s to be top scorer think that's still value!

Think Brazil will win it but at 3s I'm not too convinced and Spain at 7s is tempting!

    Anyone spotted anything

Wilfred Boni and Drogba are both 100/1 to be top goal scorer. Ivory Coast have Columbia, Japan and Greece in their group. Tempting...

I think Italy are tempting outsiders. No idea on price

Was going to do Suarez top goalscorer but with the injury i'll probably hold back and see is he fit for the first game. Benzema at a price is worth a few quid. Love the bet of choosing which two teams qualify from each group. Always usually one surprise package but i've gone with
    Belgium & Russia
    Germany & Portugal
    Argentina & Bosnia-Herzegovina
    Switzerland & France
    Uruguay & Italy
    Colombia & Ivory Coast
    Spain & Chile
    Brazil & Croatia

Have so far done Brazil & Messi @ 33/1, and Brazil & Ronaldo @ 50/1

Marco Reus is decent value at 66/1. He takes the penos for Germany

Rakitic for Croatia is 16/1 to be their top scorer, he takes their pens and free kicks and Manzdukic is out of their first game.
And Brian Kerr is in tears.

Does he? He's score once since they beat Ireland 6-1

Looking at the rest of their expected lineup he will. Also top scoring German in the Bundesliga this year

Reus is out of the World Cup now. Huge dent in Germany's chance of winning it.

I expect we'll get a South American winner. Of the European challengers, I think the temperature and more importantly humidity will do for Spain’s aging side and won’t suit Germany’s high tempo game, while the rest just aren’t good enough IMO.

Not all the venues are hot and humid (Porto Alegre is like Ireland in summer) but no team can dodge the weather for the whole tournament. Even Italian players, who you may assume could handle conditions better than a Northern European team, said they felt like they were being suffocated playing in the Confederations Cup in Recife last year (they’ll play Costa Rica there and the Germans play the USA in the same place). And that’s nothing compared to the outdoor sauna that is Manaus where they’ll play England. Even if the European teams get results in these matches I feel it’ll tell if and when they get into July.

The flip side of the climatic factor is that I could see the likes of Ivory Coast going a lot better than their odds of 150/1 would suggest, though they’d need to make the Final to pay out each way which I can’t see happening. 10/3 about them winning their group over a Colombia team without their talisman Falcao looks to be worth a shout, given that Greece and Japan are the other pair in there.

Brazil are favourites but 3/1 doesn’t appeal to me. For one thing they’re under enormous pressure and looking through their squad I can’t help but feel that, like Germany in 2006, it’ll be their misfortune to host the tournament at a time when they’re lacking the star quality usually associated with them. Their hopes probably rest on Neymar living up to hype and having not shouldered his hefty transfer fee with any great comfort at Barca this season, I wouldn’t want to be relying on him.

I’d see Argentina as the most likely winner – just think that on the law of averages at least one of Messi, Aguero or Higuaín has to catch fire. They’re all aged 26 now so if they’re ever going to win a World Cup, it’s this one. 4/1 is probably a fair enough price.

If the last four boil down to an all-South American affair (or very nearly so), then I’d like to be the right side of Uruguay, given that they’ve won more Copa Americas than anyone else and are its current holders (which they won in Argentina). They’re arguably the only outsider who wouldn’t be fazed by the psychological challenge of facing Brazil or Argentina in the latter stages and have a potential tournament top scorer in Suarez. 28/1 is a decent each way price for me.

For top goalscorer, I’d be looking for a bit of value. With both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran in Argentina’s group and the likelihood they’ll go a long way in the tournament, I reckon the 20/1 about Higuaín could be value. He scored 9 goals from 11 appearances in WC qualifying, just one behind Messi who scored 10 from 12 starts and 2 substitute appearances. He’ll likely be deployed as the central striker of a front three with Messi and Aguero ostensibly either side of him and is coming into this off a decent first season with Napoli. Messi himself is 8/1 and has the advantage of being the team’s penalty taker but was struggling for fitness in the closing stages of the season and is under enormous pressure to star in this tournament. It could well be that Higuaín profits from that and if he does happen to wind up top scorer it’ll set up an absolute head wrecker of a pub quiz question for future generations.

By the way Paddy Power are offering €5 every time your tournament top scorer selection scores – beats a kick up the hole.

    I've the following bets on

    Spain 17/2
    France 28/1
Argentina to win/Messi to be top scorer 16/1
    Benzema top scorer 25/1
    Russia to win group 23/10

Treble of team top scorers; Benzema, Lukaku, Dzeko (97.50 return for a fiver)

Few others bits & pieces. Also in 2 sweeps in work. Germany in one, Bosnia in the other

Corals offering new customers 2/1 on Brazil wearing yellow tonight! Obviously that's limited to a stake of £10 but good publicity grabber I thought...

Spain out to 12s I see no reason why they won't get out of the group! Granted I didn't see last night but they didn't become a bad side overnight?
