He said that we enquired last year (he could mean 2012) and were refused. When the opening in the first came about this year, there was clearly nothing said by FAI to Pats before they announced Rovers were taking the spot

Surely we couldn't afford the costs of having a B team
And Brian Kerr is in tears.

If you let the under 19s play most of the matches with some of the 1st team, you would be fine.

What? That cannot be right. You barely get that for winning the league.

Costs 19k to enter. Rovers have budgeted 80k total but presumably rent etc is included there. Mightn't be as expensive for other clubs

Think it's a nonsense move myself, and just shows the desperation of the FAI to keep the first division going instead of putting it out of it's misery. Not sure what Rovers are thinking. Not a road I'd like to see Pats go down.

That article would be better if the journo got the number of top-flight managers correct.

I really don't see the advantage Rovers are getting? Am I missing something?

signing promising young players ahead of other clubs, don't be surprised if some of our strong 19's players leave and go to their 1st division team

The big one now is having somewhere to keep first team squad players match fit.

As saintly says they'll now try and Hoover up the top young underage talent too

Don't see it as being a massive issue. Although the talent thing could be a concern in the very short term.

Think of it as Rovers being an 80 grand guinea pig. If it works everybody gets the option next term and if it flops Rovers are left with a whopper bill.

Leave them to it I say.

yeah don't think it'll last, be surprised if they are still doing it in 3 years. Money however won't be a problem, they'll pull in the guts of 80k in gates and sponsor etc.

Is that 80 grand confirmed anywhere? Seems really cheap. About 2000 a week. Travel in that league is horrific and they have to rent a ground to play. Doubt they'll be signing amateurs either.

Suppose they could always play in Dodder Park..........

Its a fairly big advantage to Rovers the way they hoover up players.

Look at last year, they had major player problems with the likes of Quigley, Shepherd, Zayed, Kilduff and Stewart all looking for one place, they can drop players week to week to keep them sharp/happier than doing nothing.

Lets say last year Shams would have given Kilduff 1st div game time and no doubt he would have played his way into the first team, same for players returning from injury.

It would benefit us this season with our midfielders.

Having said taht- as others said, it'll cost rover alot more than other teams who dont need to rent their ground. I dont buy that it'll dramatically increase sponsorship, LOI teams ahve the same pool of sponsors and Shams will simply end up tapping the same ones which will hopefully just come off the first team budget.

its a bit of a sham (pardon the pun) that no other league team was offered the same opportunity (especially after Pats having shown an interest in it previously)

They'd want to get their finger out. They let a huge number of players go and don't seem to have replaced too many of them. At this stage they should be into pre season so anyone coming in after this is going to struggle to get up to speed. Ourselves, Dundalk and Sligo all have pretty much the full squad in place.

80k was in the paper, don't know how reliable it is. 2k a week sounds a lot, surely just a bus journey no?

You also need training facilities (to LOI standard), kit, transport around the country, management (I presume Hawkins alone would cost 20-30k) and then increased admin expenses and management of crowds which will probably be similar to league cup attendances.

Some costs would be covered by the first team, but it could be an expensive season.

For this to work fairly, there has to be a limit on the number of players they can move between the Premier and First Division squads. It will be crazy if they'll have two teams and can move players between them as often as they like. They should only be allowed move players from one squad to the other during the transfer window.

Aren't there restrictions like this in Spain where Barca and Real Madrid have teams in a lower division? They essentially operate like two separate teams.

    Im guessing but id say

    Rent matchday/training facilities
    Insurance
    Travel
    Stadium staff
    Admin
    Licence fees
    Garda
    Wages of certain staff.

Even if they have some players playing for free they will still be entitled to expenses.

Also a lot of players who work will need to be compensated for taking every second friday off to trek all over Ireland.
