Its not scary in the slightest Dan. You're behind a fence.

If anyone's going make sure you visit "Top of the Rock". its slightly further north from the Empire State and not as high but gives MAGNIFICENT views of the Empire State Building to the south, the Chryslet building to the west and Central Park to the right.

Fabulous city that everyone should visit at least once

Madison Square Garden should be called Madison "Circle" garden because well...its in the shape of a circle.

Think you're let on out the 106th floor. Lift takes less time than most "normal" lifts take to get up 4/5 floors

Normal one is 86th floor. $15 extra to go to 102nd floor (which must be new as I've only ever been to 86th)

My favourite place in the whole world. Been twice, last time was last summer. It's truly a place everybody MUST experience because it is simply out of this world. The MSG tour is very interesting and I'd recommend it to everybody

Think the 102nd floor is just a little observation room not outdoors, it was a few years ago that I did it,was there in March this year and agree about "TOP OF THE ROCK" just as good as the Empire state building with hardly no waiting time.

Jaysus, you'd want to read up a little on the place if you think shopping is the reason they get more tourists than anywhere else

Excellent site Dodge. I was there when I was 21 on a j1, worked in Boston and took a few weeks in New York. 7 days is more than enough unless you're loaded. I'd say it's quite like Las Vegas in that respect. The funniest thing I found about New York was the polar opposite attitude towards manners of the people there, I know this could be said of any city in the world but it really applies to this one.

Last time I was in New York the twin towers were open for visitors. The day we were there the roof was open which wasn't always the case. Absolutely mind blowing the size of them buildings. To give an Idea of scale for anyone who didn't see them close up those aircraft which struck them were huge and still looked tiny in relation of the face of the buildings they struck. even the wingspan didn't seem wider than the building.

Loads to do up state New York too. The Catskill mountains and West point are must sees imo. The very best of America is outside the cities imo. Hope to camp in Yellowstone when the kids are a bit older too.

i actually walked from madison square garden down to ground zero took about an hour and a half. it was amazing seeing the real city. we stopped off for a pint a pub just beside it and they were showing us there own photos of it. and all over the bar its police and fire brigade badges. it was mental lookin at it. its a city that must be seen.

I'm heading there with my girlfriend in September for 7 days and heading to Boston for 3. I've not been there before. i haven't researched where to go and what to do too much so any advice would be appreciated.

Things i plan on doing so far:
    Staten island ferry
Empire state/chrysler/rockefeller centre -any idea's which is the best?
Central park (i think the girlfriend wants to go ice-skating too)
Walking across the Brooklyn bridge and grabbing a pint out that way
    Madison square gardens
Watch a play at Broadway - not bothered with the queueing for half price tickets
    Some shopping
A sporting event - haven't looked into that one too much
Lots of good food and drink - any suggestions near Chelsea would be great.

Anyone able to recommend a decent music venue too?

Yeah, its free and goes past the Statue of Liberty. Takes about half an hour. You can depart, and just get right back on it in Staten island. If you want to go on the Statue, you have to pay and book through one of the tour companies

Empire state/chrysler/rockefeller centre -any idea's which is the best?
I recommend Rockefeller “Top of the Rock”. Better views IMO. Empire state has better views of the financial district though. You can’t go up the Chrysler

Central park (i think the girlfriend wants to go ice-skating too)
There’ll be no ice skating in September but Central park is great. You can do a buggy ride to uimpress here and it costs about $50. If the weather’s nice you can just walk around and chill

Walking across the Brooklyn bridge and grabbing a pint out that way
We got the subway to Brooklyn and then walked into manhatten. Views are awesome. If you do it the other way (which we did first time out) you’ll be turning back eveyr few seconds to look.

Watch a play at Broadway - not bothered with the queueing for half price tickets
There’s a place in South manhatten near a fish market that sells them cheap. Didn’t bother myself but my sister got to see rent at 65% off and no queues at all.

A sporting event - haven't looked into that one too much
NFL season is just kicking off but faceprice tickets are impossible to get. Too early for ice hockey and basketball but right at the “business end” of baseball season. I bought tickets for the Yankees on ebay and if you can’t get tickets at ticketmaster, ebay is grand. Both Yankee stadium and the new mets stadium are brand new.

For food and drink, the possibilities are endless.

NHL season doesn't start til October so unless there's a friendly you'll have no joy with that anyway. NBA is the same.

Red Bulls are home to Colorado Rapids on the 11th though, andyou'll defintiely get Yankees and Mets games on too

Would reccommend Musical "phanthom of the Opera" on Broadway. Excellent show. There is an Aircraft carrier museum worth a look (closed on Mondays) Metropolitan Muesum is class if your interested in that but you would spend a day and only see half the exibits, also the Guggenheim museum is near as is Central Park. The Museum of Modern Art is not to be missed also. Would advise "Top of The Rock" as a good visit. Ellis Island and the Statute of Liberty is a good trip. Ellis Island is class. Try visiting Little Italy for a good meal, Chinatown not too far from it either. Great City with lots to do. Enjoy.

    Here's a list of place saintflub; http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56

The South Street Southport one was the one my sister got tickets at. We were on a tour bus and the guide pointed it out.
