Watched Red 2 last night, mindless comic book movie with John Malkovich in it, its pretty good for a mindless action movie.

For some reason i would do Helen Mirren......dunno why.

Presume most have seen 'Gravity' by now? Saw it in 3D and that's the only way to see it IMO. Some of the cinematography is breathtaking and that won't come across as well on a small screen. If you're looking for an actual plot, look elsewhere - it's very run of the mill in that regard.

I notice nobody has mentioned 'The Imposter' on this thread yet. It's a must see. It's a documentary film about a 13 year old kid who was abducted in Texas in 1994. Three years later a bloke turns up in a small town in Andalucia (Southern Spain) claiming to be him. It soon becomes very apparent (as if the title wasn't a giveaway) that this bloke isn't the missing kid - he's too old, too big, has the wrong colour hair, wrong colour eyes and as if all that wasn't enough, he's French not American. Regardless, the kid's sister turns up and confirms he is her missing brother and he goes 'back home' with her to live with 'his' family in Texas. It only gets weirder and more compelling from there.

If you're a fan of Hitchcock's slower paced thrillers like 'Vertigo', 'The Birds' and 'Marnie' you'll probably enjoy 'Stoker' (which incidentally has nothing to do with Dracula or the bloke who wrote it). There's a definite whiff of Hitch's 'Shadow Of A Doubt' about it but it's not a remake, it's a whole lot darker. Slow but creepily tense. It's directed by Korean Park Chan-wook who is most famous for 'Oldboy' (see earlier on this thread for details of that one).

Watched a documentary called Undefeated which. I thought was excellent.

It's about a high school American football team and the problems they face being from Memphis and struggles on and off the pitch. Pretty interesting and a good story.

It's very good. It's pretty clear Scorsese took whatever template he used for making Goodfellas and applied it here (Di Caprio even sounds like he's imitiating Liotta's voice when narrating). Mostly that's a positive thing that works very well, but unfortunately it also shares the dragged out last 45 minutes of Goodfellas (this film doesn't need to be almost 3 hours long). That's its main flaw but it's still his best film of recent years for me (I preferred this to 'The Departed') and Di Caprio is excellent in it.

I thought 12 years.... Was awful. Really dragged out with some pointless scenes. Watched Her last night, and that's not up to much either.

Liked 12 Years even if it was a bit dragged out. Liked 'Her' too for its uniqueness.

Watched 'The Great Beauty' (which won Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars) last night. Or rather watched half of it before switching it off it was so bad. Pile of random psuedo-arthouse prententious wank. Burlesconi's company produced it and I strongly suspect plams got greased to get it the reviews it's got. 'The Hunt', dark though the subject matter is, is an excellent film and would have made a much more worthy winner.

I thought 12 Years was a bit of a letdown. Good film but I expected something grittier and less cinematic, along the lines of Shame and Hunger. Reckon that'll be McQueen's M.O. from now on.

There was an element of 'Oscar bait' about it alright. And thought no way should Lupita N'yongo have won Best Supporting Actress - *spoiler alert* she had very little dialogue and the impact of the whipping scene was more down to the effects department than her.. Thought June Squibb should have got it for the cranky oul wan in Nebraska (which is a slow film in which not much happens but I liked it a lot I must say).

yep, agree on the supporting actress oscar. Dont agree with it at all and seems based purely on that scene !! i would nearly go as far as to say its patronising.
It was a good movie and she was decent, but some of the stuff written about it is just ridiculous. Its subject matter cranked up the reviews and recognition massively IMO

    Watched Prisoners last night.

Pretty good, quite dark with a few twists and turns.

Both Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal were excellnt in it, as was Paul Dano who I love.

Trailer for those who are interested.

So I watched Argo at the weekend - was expecting something completely different, but thought it was very tense and well made.

Not a movie, but I have FINALLY started watching Friday Night Lights the TV series. I just finished series 2. Love it!! For anyone who doesn't know it's based around a small Texan town's high school football team. Having recently read the original book that it's based on, I can see how true to life it is. Those crazy Americans and their high school football.

For doc lovers, I also recently watched The Summit, which was an RTE BBC co production looking at the K2 disaster in which 11 climbers were killed. Very, very well made. http://thesummitfilm.com/
I saw someone else above mention The Imposter - one of the craziest docs I have ever seen, a must watch.

The film is pretty good too but the TV show has more time to develop stuff and it works perfectly
