Ferguson's in his 70's and his teams (always regarded as cavalier) have moved away from always deploying 4-4-2 in recent years. Hiddink's a pensioner too and regarded as one of the best tacticians in the game. Arguably the manager with most negative tactics in the last World Cup (relative to the resources he had available) was Dunga who'd only retired a decade before. The date on the birth cert isn't the problem here.

My post was about his experience, not his age.

Ferguson has been pitting his wits against the very best coaches in the EPL and CL for decades. Tactically he's as astute as any of the top young coaches. And he has always had someone - Kidd, McLaren, Quieroz, Phelan - who has their finger on the pulse too.

Trap, for all his experience, was managing Red Bull Salzburg when we appointed him. Why?

    He needed wings?

Seriously though, you've made repeated references to him beginning his career in the 50s. That's not relevant to anything. That he hasn't managed at the highest level in the last decade arguably is, granted. Tardelli's record in coaching wouldn't be out of place among some of Ferguson's sidekicks either - won a European U-21 Championship with Italy, didn't seem to be able to manage top clubs but the same could be said of McLaren and Quieroz.

He did apparently have a reputation of burning his bridges with people wherever he went in his management career, probably contributed to his options being limited by the end.

Any references I've made to his age have been jokingly. There's a trend towards younger managers right across Europe (especially at the very top clubs and internationally) but I do think it's just trend. Exerience is undervalued at most levels of football; but it needs to be relevant. I don't think someone applying for a job today would have on their CV what they did for a living 30 years agom Equally, I don't think Trap winning, for instance, the European Cup in '84 or whenever it was is relevant to the current debate about his management.

Any chance we could nab Redknapp as a replacement?

Problem with replacing Trap (whether now or after our WC 2014 qualifying campaign - because I can't see that ending in success) is the environment the FAI find themselves in. It’s a tough sell to get a decent young manager to go into International management in the best of circumstances. With a country like Ireland, with our backward footballing philosophy and substandard coaching infrastructure, that becomes all the more difficult. It doesn’t just come down to the remuneration on offer, any manager worth hiring would have to take into account the players he has available and ours wouldn’t turn many heads, all the more so if they find themselves at the start of a rebuilding process. Realistically, our options are limited to hiring somebody with a track record at the highest level, albeit that it may be further back than we’d like, or taking a punt on somebody who has never coached at that level. No guarantee of success either way. Anyone better than that should have sufficiently good options at club level to give us a wide berth.

Problem with redknapp is that we'll have to pay him 2 million a year which after tax is about.....2 million a year

We'd probably need to Manuela on a retainer. She does cockney rhyming slang, apparently.

40 games for hull city, a lever higher than Keith Tracey last season. There's a reason there's a song for you.

Treacy did have a decent season in 10/11 for Preston in the Championship. Didn't think he'd get to an Ireland squad again!

I also don't think Tracey should be in the squad either so using that is response to me is pointless! how many assists and goals did he get in a league below lets say wes hoolahan?

Wes is a cam and Robbie is a LM OR LB since he played there the other night. So poor comparison. My comparison was for position.
