I'd fancy our chances against any of the 2nd place teams. The football we play is ideally suited to two-legged knock out games. Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro are probably the trickiest sides we could face. If we can avoid those I'd be quite confident.

We still need a result tonight, though

Jesus we are steeped in this game. Not sure if their keeper actually handled the ball on the sending off but Cox certainly did when controlling it for that chance. Doyle misses a sitter, in doing so ties the defender up in knots and he puts it in his own net. In a game where they've been the better side. Crazy stuff.

The Irish left side is fcuking awful. McGeady and Kelly are all over the shop. Still, we're somehow winning.

    What were you expecting?

We'll miss Doyle badly. For the first time since the Charlton era we have a bit of depth up front, but none come close to Doyle and Keane for experience. I'd love to see Walter up top in the first leg. He really has a lot to offer. More question marks remain over the others for me. Cox justified his selection tonight but he's probably more of a partner for Doyle than a replacement.

The sooner Seamus Coleman is in the starting XI and O'Shea is the permanent LB the better.

Even playing absolutely awful, we were lucky. Armenia are a very decent football team, we play football the right way. The complete opposite to us, who use route 1 from Dunne to Doyle for a flick on. And that's how we play. Can't see it changing anytime soon either so no point saying we should do this or that.

Since Trap took over, don't think I've ever agreed with any of his starting lineups. For the play-offs, irrespective who it is, we should start with: Given, O'Shea, St.Ledger, Dunne, Ward, Duff, McCarthy, Fahey, Hunt, Cox, Walters.

Fuck this Gibson/Whelan partnership. I don't care less about the past and whether McCarthy did this or McCarthy did that, he's a genuine footballer, who gets the ball down as plays football. Likewise, Keith Fahey, Hunt offers three times as much as McGeady does ( lost count how many times he lost the ball tonight ). Cox was fantastic (deserving of MOTM) and Walters when he came on was likewise. Couldn't fault him. Doyle is a fucking eejit anyway, stupid challenge and like what Capello has said to Rooney ' I'll be picking my team for the first game, and if it works, it's up to you to try and get back into it for the second game '. Same should apply for Doyle. Although, don't know why Long is getting overlooked..

I agree with Dunphy too, I think every team will want to get us and regardless whether we are seeded or not, I think we'll be the underdogs. I'm not expecting to get through, if we did though, it'd be a great lift for not only football in this country, but the country in general.

According to Wiki, we will be seeded unless Serbia win as we are ranked higher than Turkey, Czechs, Montenegro and Estonia

    As it stands:

    Seeded: Portugal, Croatia, France, Ireland

Unseeded: Czech Rep, Turkey, Montenegro, Estonia

Only a Serbia win can unseed us, they are 1-0 down with 4 minutes left

It's difficult for any two people to agree on a first XI, but you have a couple there that I wouldn't have near the starting line up for the first leg.

Ward couldn't have been worse for the double header against Slovakia and Russia. Until he learns some rudimentary positioning (the kind of thing Bermo does instinctively because he is, in fact, a full back) he shouldn't be considered barring an injury crisis.

Whelan and Andrews as a partnership are dire. I feel sorry for them in that Trap has clearly assigned them very constricting roles in much the same way Benitez did to Mascherano and Alonso both of whom are genuinely world class. Andrews is a poor player. Whelan isn't. I'd stick with him and give him a more progressive partner.

    Given

    Coleman..Dunne..St Ledger..O'Shea
McGeady (he's right-footed, he should play on the right)..Whelan..McCarthy..Duff
    Cox/Long..Walters

    Id go :
    Given
    Coleman...Dunne...St Ledger...O'Shea
    Hunt...Fahey...Whelan...Duff
    Cox/Walters...Long
Cant see how McGeady gets his game ahead of Hunt, Fahey is miles better than Andrews IMO and Long should start ahead of Walters for defo miles better too

If we play Hunt and Duff we're still playing a left-footed player on the right.

McGeady covered brilliantly for Ward throughout the Russia game. He's no world-beater, but he's a better player than he's ever given credit for.

I usually like McGeady but, he was gash tonight.

So, who are the unseeded teams? Estonia, Czech Rep, Montenegro and Turkey?
