Portugal struggled too, 0-0 at home to Macedonia. Friendles do mean fuck all alright, but the German defending was comical yesterday, even for a friendly

Rodgers about to start a 3 year contract with liverpool that will last until......feb 2013???? Doubt their big club fans will be patient with any sort of rebuilding.

In other news would Buckley be suitable for the Swansea job? or will Pep take over?

Doubt rogers style will work at Liverpool. Swansea, Barca and Pats play similar styles (1 up front, one deep lying midfielder, press high up the pitch)

Barca have one of the best player units on the planet, like pats do.

But it worked to a degree for Swansea because other teams viewed them lightly and attacked allowing space for counter attacks.

With Liverpool most teams will swamp the defence and let them have the ball- and Liverpool aren't good enough to break that down.

So the line of succession with their managers will look like this:

As I said when Bielsa's name was being bandied about for the Barca job, these 'flavour of the month' appointments rarely work out. Liverpool themselves made one only two years ago that didn't last a wet week.

That sounds nice but it doesn't really mean anything.

Surely Dalglish was someone who knew the way?

If I was a Liverpool supporter I'd be hugley encouraged by this appointment. There's a world of difference between appointing a seasoned manager on the basis of a good season or two (Hodgson, Redknapp fall into this category) and appointing a young coach with a clear vision for the same reason.

His 'clear vision' got him sacked within four months of his first season in charge at Reading (in the Championship). And we're only going back 4 years here. Rodgers has only had a good season or two in his management career. Maybe he did well at Swansea because he's an exceptional manager. Or maybe it was a case of right place, right time and he won't be able to replicate it elsewhere. Huge gamble on Liverpool's part to put all their eggs in the basket of the former being the case.

What I will say in their defence is that viable candidates aren't exactly jumping off the page at them. Most managers that have the sort of experience they really need probably wouldn't touch them at the moment. Capello has the track record but he's 65 now and this job will take time (plus he wouldn't be shy about demanding a king's ransom). Pelligrini might have been just about the best out there they may have been tempted, though whether they'd have coaxed him away from Malaga's cash is another matter (not sure if he's speaks English either tbh).

He was doing pretty well with Watford before he left for Reading though tbf.

Add de Bruyne to that list.

Wouldn't be shocked to see Drogba sign a new deal, though, and next year's squad to be built around JT, Lampard, and him.

As for Hazard, he has to be the most overly-hyped footballer since the turn of the century.

Most of the people hyping him have more than likely never see him play aswell.

He is a cracking player though.

He's good but I don't think he's any better than the other players to have joined the EPL from ligue 1 in the last 10 or 15 years. Pires, for instance, was a far more complete player with an end product to his game.

I don't see him being any more important to the team than Mata or Ramires. Certainly an improvement on Malouda and Kalou, but he's not going to make up the 20 odd points between Chelsea and City/UTD by himself, which is what some of the hyperbole suggests.

That French league aint too bad atm to be fair. A lot of decent players that will make up a lot of the French team for the Euro's. The likes of Menez,Remy,Yann M'vila, Diarra and Valbuena would be stand out to me. Better then they have had in a long time.

Remy's not in the squad but that lad is a beast.

seems abramovich doesnt like not being top dog- collossol amount of money (whats the deal with Uefa FFP?)

as an arsenal fan i'd jizz all over theh screen at signing those three- instead I guess i'll just have to do with a van persie sale and wadloads of cash to stuff in our empty trophy cabinet!

Hazard is an amazing player - and still only like 21/22 and has already won player of the year in france twice back to back.

Also going to the Premier League from Ligue 1 isn't as big a step as going from Serie A/ La liga to the PL. Ligue 1 is very physical and probably the closets top league in Europe to the PL
