I still don't see how it is good for the league. It gets Rovers money, not the league. Anybody from Europe will think all the rest of the teams must be shite if this is there first team to get into the groups. And Rovers will get destroyed in the groups, so they will seem shite too, Which will leave an overall impression on people that Irish football is still shit.

So, what you are saying is, its kind of our own fault....

It's important they don't win the league this year now!

First of all, there isn't a chance they'll win the League this year. They'll be bolloxed after the Europa games.
Secondly, they get 460k. That's all. The rest is dependent on winning or drawing games and that's unlikely. This isn't the Champions League here u know. Calm down. By the time the players get their bonus, there won't be much change out of 460k!!! And what's left ain't gonna guarantee them any leagues. There is no evidence of a club from a 'smaller' nation that makes a breakthrough in the Europa going on to dominate their domestic league. Champions League yes, (see Rosenborg), Europa no.

That's all true I think. I can definitely see them running out of steam in this years title race. Still, it's a problem that I'm sure we'd love to have. I have to give them credit though. Great battling performance, and a wonder goal from Sullivan. (Thought the penalty looked a bit iffy though. More than a hint of a dive about it. If it makes more people sit up and take notice of the local game then it might have a positive effect overall on the league, and it should help other clubs in Europe in future years as we creep up the co-efficient table.

Oh, and financially it's good, but not in the league of the champions league.

Rovers get 640k for qualifying but get NO extra money for tv rights etc. It's 140k for a win, 70k for a draw and 0 for a loss.

Travel will eat up at as much as 150 k (their gate receipts for 3 games)

Allow they will need to extend player contract in duration by 20-40% (if i recall their accounts show for 2010 they spend 1.2 mill on wages) that's 200-300k in extra unplanned wages + probable pay increases and bonuses and extended professional contracts (players won't accept 37week semi promcontracts after this)

So at the end they will only be slightly ahead of what they gotast year for tv money for the juve game.

    Point is still the same.
Look at Cyprus. Their teams would've been considered a soft touch years ago. They made a breakthrough into Group Stages of the Europa but 3 different teams have won the League there in the last 4 years.

I'm delighted there's an Irish club in the group stages! But why oh why did it have to be that lot?? For the love of God, why!! Oh the humanity!!!!!

Hopefully they take their eyes off the ball now when it comes to their league form!

You're forgetting TV rights, which is where they'll really reap the rewards. There's every chance they'll get drawn against one of the likes of Seville, Roma, PSV or Spurs as well as two other lesser draws.

Fuck Monday its unwatchable for the rest of the season now

Its not just about money it's fucking everything, Publicity sponsorship everything, We are in direct competition (south Dublin) with them for fans, Not a chance anyone who is thinking about going to a LOI game in South Dublin will come to us now (it was slim before this), Its not good for the league, it's good for Rovers thats it

Oh if we hadn't of missed those chances against Heartha

League over for next 5 years at least
And Brian Kerr is in tears.

its great for irish football.it will get young lads into irish football.our crowds might even rise because of it.obviousley I'd rather it was us that where in the group stages but we will still benefit in the long run.also rovers have to play lots of matches now so more than likely they'll slip up in the league.

There is no tv rights in the Europa league- they are sold centrally similar to the champions league. You get prize money only from playoff round onward.

Rovers get 640k + performane prize money (as above 140 for a win, 70 for a draw, 0 for a loss)

Whats great about this is that Rovers have made the breakthrough without spendning money they dont have on over inflated wages, like many clubs were doing a few years ago.

okay, fair enough, BUT sell out crowds now probably for every game, advertising through the roof and sponsorship through the roof, which means they are rich enough to buy the league next year and the year after and keep getting Europe

To the best of my knowledge rovers are not allowed sell advertising hoardings either for these games- Uefa allocate them to the competition sponsors (I know this is the case in the CL)

Has to happen at some stage.

Isn't that what we've all been saying for years about a LOI Club getting into Europe proper?

BTW, sick how easy of a path they had to get there......

From reading below on wiki there may be a tv top up- but no doubt we are one of the smallest markets so it wouldn't be massive.

Similarly to the UEFA Champions League, the prize money received by the clubs is divided into fixed payments based on participation and results, and variable amounts that depend of the value of their TV market.[15]

A group stage participation in the Europa League nets €640,000, with a €60,000 bonus per group match played. A victory in the group pays €140,000 and a draw €70,000. Reaching the knock-out matches triggers additional bonuses: €200,000 for the round of 32, €300,000 for the round of 16, €400,000 for the quarterfinals and €700,000 for the semifinals. The losing finalists receive €2*million and the champions get €3*million.[16] In comparison, any team that reaches the UEFA Champions League group stage will be paid €3.9*million.[17]

According to Marko Vjetrović, spokesman of Partizan Belgrade and a member of the European Club Association (ECA), the fixed payments for the 2009/2010 UEFA Europa League season were as follows:[18][19]

    1st qualifying round: €90,000
    2nd qualifying round: €90,000
    3rd qualifying round: €90,000
    Playoffs: €90,000
    Group stage: €1,000,000
    Group match victory: €120,000
    Group match draw: €60,000
    1st knock out round: €180,000
    2nd knock out round: €270,000
    Quarter-finals: €360,000
    Semi-finals: €630,000
    Losing Finalist: €2,000,000
    Winning the Final: €3,000,000

Like most people, of all the teams in Ireland, I hate Rovers. Never got the whole anti-Shels thing of the 90s. It was always Rovers for me.
Hoped they would go out of business. Still do.
BUT I HATE PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW ENGLISH OR SCOTTISH TEAMS MORE.
Can't wait to stuff this to every one of them.
